Program Description

Any of the agents used for sedation and/or analgesia may result in adverse effects. These adverse effects frequently affects upper airway patency, ventilatory function or the cardiovascular system. This course reviews the pharmacology of the most commonly used agents for sedation and outlines their primary effects on respiratory and cardiovascular function. Suggested guidelines for the avoidance of adverse effects through appropriate pre‑sedation evaluation, early identification of changes in respiratory and cardiovascular function, and their treatment are outlined.

Learning Objectives

The learner will be able to:
1. Compare common sedation agents.
2. Discuss adverse effects of common sedation agents.
3. Discuss the avoidance of adverse effects through appropriate pre-sedation
evaluation.
4. Explain possible changes in respiratory and cardiovascular function related to
procedural sedation.

20 Randomized Question Exam 80% or better required for CE credits.
